Buldhana, Maharashtra: In a rare medical occurrence, a 32-year-old pregnant woman from Maharashtra’s Buldhana district has been diagnosed with “fetus in fetu,” a rare congenital anomaly where a malformed fetus is found inside another fetus. The condition, occurring in approximately one in 500,000 births, has only around 200 documented cases worldwide, with 10-15 cases reported in India.

The anomaly was detected during a routine sonography at Buldhana District Women’s Hospital when doctors identified an unusual mass in the abdomen of the unborn baby. Further examination confirmed the presence of a non-viable parasitic twin, a hallmark characteristic of the fetus in fetu condition.

Dr. Prasad Agarwal, the obstetrician overseeing the case, stated, “This is an extremely rare condition that develops due to an abnormal twinning process in the early stages of fetal development. While the condition is often detected postnatally, prenatal detection through advanced imaging techniques has made early diagnosis possible.”

Following the discovery, the expectant mother has been referred to a specialized medical facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar for advanced care and delivery planning. Medical experts anticipate a carefully managed delivery to ensure the health and safety of both the mother and the newborn.

Cases like these continue to intrigue medical researchers and highlight the importance of prenatal screenings in detecting rare congenital anomalies. As doctors prepare for the delivery, this case will add to the limited global knowledge about fetus in fetu and its management.
