Thamarassery, Kerala—A rare and deadly brain infection, amoebic encephalitis, has tragically taken the life of a 9-year-old girl from north Kerala, sending shockwaves through the local community and raising alarms among health authorities.

According to health officials, the infection is caused by a free-living amoeba found in contaminated water sources. The young victim was admitted to the hospital with a persistent fever on August 13, and, due to her worsening condition, transferred to Kozhikode Medical College on August 14. Despite medical efforts, she passed away the same day. Laboratory results confirmed late Friday night that amoebic encephalitis was the direct cause of death.

Officials have launched an investigation to determine the exact water source where the child may have contracted the infection. They are also working to identify others who may have recently come in contact with the potentially contaminated site.

This marks the fourth reported case of amoebic encephalitis in the district this year, underlining the seriousness of waterborne diseases in the region and the need for increased public awareness and preventive measures.

What Is Amoebic Encephalitis?

Amoebic encephalitis is an acute, often fatal, brain infection caused by certain types of free-living amoebae. Transmission usually occurs when contaminated water enters the body through the nose, typically while swimming or bathing. Early symptoms are nonspecific and can include fever, headache, nausea, and neurological changes, often progressing rapidly and making early diagnosis challenging.

Public Health Advisory

Health officials urge residents to avoid swimming or bathing in stagnant or contaminated water bodies, especially during the warmer months when cases tend to rise. Prompt medical attention is crucial if symptoms develop after exposure to natural water sources.
