Jaipur, Rajasthan – Rajasthan has emerged as the leading state in India in its aggressive campaign against food adulteration, according to Medical and Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar. Speaking in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, Minister Khimsar highlighted the state government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of consumables like fruits and vegetables.
Between March 3 and March 12, 2025, the state’s health department conducted an impressive 1,340 food inspections, resulting in the collection of 3,363 samples, including those from well-known brands. Numerous First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed against sellers found guilty of adulteration.
Responding to an attention motion raised by MLA Bhagchand Tankada, Minister Khimsar revealed that Rajasthan has surpassed the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) mandates by collecting 284% more samples than required under the Food Safety Act. He emphasized that the department is conducting surprise inspections and taking stringent action against violators.
To bolster its testing capabilities, Rajasthan currently operates 11 food testing laboratories across key cities, including Alwar, Bharatpur, Kota, Bikaner, Ajmer, Udaipur, Banswara, Jalore, Churu, Jaipur, and Jodhpur. Seven new labs in Sikar, Nagaur, Barmer, Dholpur, Sriganganagar, Bhilwara, and Baran are also set to become operational soon. Furthermore, the 2025-26 budget includes provisions for establishing additional labs in Hanumangarh, Sawai Madhopur, Jaisalmer, Pali, Sirohi, Chittorgarh, and Dungarpur.
Minister Khimsar also addressed the critical need for increased manpower, noting that while 97 food safety officers are currently employed, a recruitment drive for 300 more officers is underway to enhance inspection efforts. He urged municipal authorities to take strict action against those using contaminated water for cultivating produce and appealed to food vendors to prioritize public health over financial gains.
“With stringent enforcement measures, increased testing capacity, and expanded manpower, the Rajasthan government aims to make food safety a top priority, ensuring the well-being of people,” Minister Khimsar stated.
