Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagde on Thursday underlined the urgent need for global research, awareness, and enhanced treatment options for birth defects. Speaking at the Sixth International Conference on Congenital Disorders, organized under the “Rising Rajasthan” initiative by Mahatma Gandhi University of Medical Sciences and Technology, Governor Bagde highlighted the growing concerns surrounding congenital disorders worldwide.

Citing World Health Organization data, he revealed that approximately 6% of children globally are born with congenital disorders, contributing to hundreds of thousands of deaths annually. “The first happiness is a healthy body,” the Governor remarked, advocating for proactive health maintenance through practices like yoga and raising awareness to ensure healthier lives for future generations.

Call for Action in Rajasthan and Beyond

The Governor called for a comprehensive national campaign to address congenital disorders and urged Rajasthan to lead the way in tackling emerging health challenges. He lauded the state’s achievements in eradicating polio and other diseases while encouraging similar strategies to combat tuberculosis (TB), cancer, and other modern health crises.

To address cancer, he proposed the systematic registration of patients, facilitating early diagnosis and treatment. He also advocated for campaigns targeting de-addiction and raising awareness about diseases stemming from contemporary dietary habits.

Pioneering Research and Collaboration

The conference witnessed significant contributions from experts in the field. Dr. Dharmendra Kumar discussed advancements in genetic diseases and gene therapy, emphasizing the transformative potential of emerging medical technologies.

Dr. M.L. Swarnkar, the university’s founder, urged the central government to establish a “Centre of Excellence” at the university for its pioneering work in treating rare childhood diseases. Meanwhile, Dr. Ashok Gupta, the seminar convener, provided an in-depth overview of the medical dimensions of congenital disorders, underscoring the importance of early detection and intervention.

A Vision for a Healthier Future

Governor Bagde emphasized that robust public health campaigns and innovative research are crucial to mitigating the impact of congenital disorders. As Rajasthan continues to progress, he called on the state to set an example in advancing healthcare, fostering research, and ensuring equitable treatment options for all.

The event was a significant step toward creating a global platform for addressing congenital disorders, with Rajasthan positioning itself as a hub for healthcare innovation and excellence.
