A senior professor and the Head of the Medicine Department at Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College in Raipur has been removed from his position and booked by police following allegations of sexual harassment made by a female medical student.
The alleged incident occurred between January 2 and 10 earlier this year. The student accused the doctor, who is reportedly in his forties, of making obscene acts towards her. She initially approached college authorities to report the inappropriate behavior, prompting an internal inquiry. Following the inquiry, the accused was removed from his role as Head of Department.
Subsequently, the student filed a formal complaint with the police. An FIR was registered under sections 74 (Assault or use of criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 75 (Sexual harassment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act, 2023. Police attempted to arrest the doctor at his residence, but he was reportedly missing and is currently on the run. Efforts to locate him are ongoing.
The Dean of the medical college stated that the administration was not informed by the student about her decision to approach the police and learned about the police case through media reports. The Dean confirmed that the student had earlier approached the college’s Internal Complaints Committee (Vishakha committee), which investigated the allegations and submitted a report to the government.
This incident comes amid broader concerns among students at the college, who recently staged protests demanding improved hostel accommodations and the rollback of exam fee hikes, citing safety and health concerns.
