Chandigarh, Punjab – The Punjab government has issued an immediate statewide suspension of saline solution circulation following a cluster of allergic reactions reported at a hospital in Sangrur. The decision was prompted by multiple patients in the mother and child ward experiencing adverse reactions after receiving saline infusions.

Principal Secretary of Health, G Kumar Rahul, conducted an on-site visit to the Sangrur hospital to assess the situation and ensure the stability of the affected patients. “There were 14 patients in the mother and child ward who showed allergy symptoms after receiving saline. All patients are now stable,” Rahul stated. He further confirmed that the distribution and use of saline solutions have been halted across the state, pending thorough laboratory testing.

In addition to the saline suspension, the government has also issued a strict ban on the use of glucose solution, which is stocked in three Punjab warehouses, until further clearance. “We’ve halted the use of saline statewide pending lab tests and instructed that the glucose solution should not be used until cleared,” Rahul emphasized.

Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh has assured the public that a comprehensive investigation into the incident is underway. “We have withdrawn the problematic batch and will be conducting rigorous testing,” Singh confirmed. The minister reported that approximately 15 patients experienced allergic reactions.

Civil Surgeon Dr. Baljeet Singh provided further details, stating that while 14-15 women initially reported complications, two cases remain critical but are under close observation. “We are closely monitoring the two critical cases and ensuring they receive the best possible care,” Dr. Singh said.

The government’s swift action underscores the seriousness of the situation and its commitment to ensuring patient safety. The health department is working diligently to identify the cause of the allergic reactions and prevent future occurrences.
