Mohali, Punjab:
In a significant move to address the shortage of medical professionals in government hospitals, the Punjab government has initiated the recruitment process for 1,000 new doctors. The announcement was made by Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh, who emphasized the government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery across the state.
Addressing Staffing Shortages
The recruitment drive comes in response to increasing demand for healthcare services and persistent staffing shortages in several government hospitals. Dr. Singh, during a recent surprise inspection of healthcare facilities in Dera Bassi, Lalru, and Zirakpur (Dhakoli), observed firsthand the challenges faced by both patients and medical staff due to inadequate personnel and infrastructure.
“Punjab government is committed to delivering quality healthcare services in government hospitals, which include free lab tests and medicines,” Dr. Singh stated. He highlighted that while specialists in medicine, surgery, gynecology, and pediatrics are available in most sub-divisional hospitals and community health centres (CHCs), there is a pressing need for more staff, particularly in eye, ENT, and dermatology departments. Plans are underway to assign these specialists on a weekly basis to facilities where such positions are currently vacant.
Infrastructure and Service Enhancements
During his inspection, Dr. Singh noted that the CHC in Lalru is well-equipped and will benefit from the addition of new staff to further enhance service delivery. The sub-divisional hospital in Dera Bassi, although adequately staffed, faces space constraints that the government aims to address. In Zirakpur, he drew attention to the availability of advanced medical services, such as laparoscopic surgery, which is now offered alongside other essential treatments.
Focus on Quality and Accessibility
The minister also acknowledged the ongoing issue of nursing staff shortages and reiterated the government’s dedication to ensuring high-quality patient care. By engaging directly with patients and medical staff, Dr. Singh sought to gather insights and provide directives aimed at improving healthcare outcomes and accessibility.
The decision to recruit 1,000 Medical Officers (MBBS) was finalized during a meeting between key health officials, including Principal Secretary Health and Family Welfare Kumar Rahul, Director Health Services Dr. Hitinder Kaur, and representatives of the Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA).
Looking Ahead
This recruitment drive is expected to significantly bolster the state’s healthcare infrastructure and improve patient care in government hospitals across Punjab. The government’s proactive approach reflects its ongoing efforts to meet the growing healthcare needs of its population.
