Pune, Aug 5 — Pune has reported a sharp decline in rabies cases among stray dogs, marking a significant public health achievement, according to recent figures released by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). This progress, driven by extensive vaccination efforts and animal birth control measures, positions Pune as a potential model for other Indian cities grappling with zoonotic diseases.

PMC data reveals that suspected rabies cases in stray dogs have dropped from 373 in 2018 to just 19 so far in 2025. Confirmed cases have plummeted even more dramatically, sliding from 220 in 2018 to 3 this year. Health officials further highlight a notable decrease in the rabies positivity rate among tested strays — falling from 75% in 2020–21 to just 15% in 2025.

Dr Sarika Funde-Bhosale, Chief Veterinary Officer at PMC, credits this progress to the administration of over 1.91 lakh anti-rabies vaccine doses to stray and community dogs, along with robust implementation of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme. Suspected rabid dogs are isolated at PMC quarantine facilities and, if negative, are returned to their local territories, ensuring humane management. Following any confirmed case, mass vaccinations and public health campaigns are rapidly deployed in affected localities.

“Our efforts have not only curbed rabies cases but have also heightened public awareness on reporting dog bites and seeking timely medical care,” Dr Funde-Bhosale said.

While the decline in rabies is clear, public concern remains high due to persistently elevated dog bite incidents — with over 42,000 cases reported in the past three years, and more than one lakh since 2022. Civic officials attribute some of this rise to better reporting and increased public vigilance, stressing the need for continued community education and expanded vaccination coverage.

Experts and advocacy groups abroad have lauded Pune’s approach, stating that regular sterilisation and comprehensive vaccination, rather than culling, are central to humane and effective rabies control. However, they stress sustained funding, infrastructure, and consistent policy implementation are crucial for continued success.

Disclaimer: The information in this article is based on official data released by the Pune Municipal Corporation as of August 5, 2025, and media reports. While efforts have substantially reduced rabies cases among stray dogs, authorities and public health experts caution that the risk of dog bites and associated diseases persists. Readers are urged to follow official advice on bite prevention and seek timely medical care in case of exposure.
