New Delhi – Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have issued a warning regarding the potential link between prolonged steroid use and an increased risk of developing glaucoma. This cautionary note comes amidst rising concerns about the long-term effects of steroid medications, which are widely prescribed for various medical conditions.

According to the AIIMS ophthalmology department, extended exposure to steroids, whether through oral, topical, or inhaled routes, can lead to a significant elevation in intraocular pressure (IOP). This increased pressure within the eye is a primary risk factor for glaucoma, a condition that can cause irreversible damage to the optic nerve and ultimately lead to vision loss.

“While steroids are effective in treating numerous inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, their prolonged use can disrupt the eye’s drainage system, causing fluid buildup and a subsequent rise in IOP,” explained a senior ophthalmologist at AIIMS. “Patients using steroids for extended periods should undergo regular eye examinations to monitor their IOP and detect any early signs of glaucoma.”

The doctors emphasized that individuals using steroid eye drops, creams, or inhalers are also at risk. They highlighted the importance of adhering to prescribed dosages and durations, and consulting with both their primary care physician and an ophthalmologist to manage potential side effects.

The warning also targets individuals who might be using over-the-counter steroid creams or eye drops without proper medical supervision. Self-medication with steroids can be particularly dangerous, as it often leads to uncontrolled usage and increased risk of adverse effects.

AIIMS doctors recommend that patients on long-term steroid therapy should undergo comprehensive eye examinations, including IOP measurements and optic nerve assessments, at regular intervals. Early detection and intervention are crucial in preventing irreversible vision loss due to steroid-induced glaucoma.

This advisory serves as a timely reminder of the importance of responsible steroid use and the need for vigilant monitoring of potential side effects, particularly concerning eye health.
