Chandigarh, June 10, 2025 — In a remarkable stride for patient care and youth engagement, Project Sarathi, the flagship hospital navigation and patient support initiative from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has expanded its footprint across 34 states and Union Territories. The announcement was made by PGIMER officials on Monday, marking a new chapter in healthcare facilitation and community involvement.
A Model for Nationwide Impact
Launched as a pilot at PGIMER on May 5, 2024, Project Sarathi was designed to address the growing need for hospital navigators and patient support services. The project enlists student volunteers to guide patients and their families through the often-complex hospital environment, ensuring they feel supported and well-informed from the moment they arrive.
With the robust backing of the Union Ministries of Health and Family Welfare, and Youth Affairs and Sports, Project Sarathi’s model has now been adopted under the “Seva Se Seekhen” experiential learning programme. According to Pankaj Rai, Deputy Director (Administration) at PGIMER, 1,467 hospitals nationwide have been approved for participation, as listed on the MyBharat portal.
Empowering Youth, Enhancing Patient Experience
Professor Vivek Lal, Director of PGIMER, expressed his enthusiasm for the project’s rapid growth. “Project Sarathi was launched with the twin objectives of simplifying hospital navigation for patients and channelizing the energy of India’s youth towards meaningful social contributions,” he said. “It has evolved into a distinctive model of community engagement, fostering civic consciousness and empathy among students.”
The initiative has already logged more than 50,000 volunteer service hours at PGIMER alone, highlighting its effectiveness in addressing hospital-level challenges while nurturing a new generation of service-minded youth.
Government Support and Future Prospects
The joint support from the Ministries of Health and Family Welfare, and Youth Affairs underscores the government’s confidence in Project Sarathi’s long-term potential. With its nationwide expansion, the initiative is set to further enhance patient facilitation and youth engagement in healthcare settings.
Looking ahead, PGIMER and its partners are optimistic about scaling up the project, with increased institutional and governmental backing expected to drive further innovation and impact.
