Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prof. S. P. Singh Baghel, alongside Minister of Health & Family Welfare Shri Keshab Mahanta of the Assam government, inaugurated the World AIDS Day event at the Srimanta Sankaradeva International Auditorium in Guwahati, Assam. This year’s World AIDS Day theme, “Let Communities Lead,” formed the backdrop for Prof. Baghel’s reflection on India’s journey combating the disease. He highlighted the pivotal role played by ordinary citizens as communities transitioned from fear to resilience. While noting the decreased fear surrounding AIDS today, he urged continued vigilance.
Prof. Baghel emphasized the government’s steadfast commitment to eradicating HIV/AIDS, citing the substantial allocation of Rs. 15,471 crores for Phase V of the National AIDS and STD Control program. He hailed this initiative as the realization of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay’s vision for “Swasth Antodaya.” Additionally, he lauded the HIV and AIDS Prevention and Control Act of 2017 for bolstering human rights and combating societal discrimination against HIV patients. Stressing India’s belief in “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family), he credited successful disease control to Prime Minister Modi’s leadership.
The distribution of Ayushman Cards to attendees marked another significant moment, showcasing Assam’s accomplishment in issuing the highest number of cards among large states. David Bridger, Country Director of UNAIDS, underscored the pivotal role of community-led organizations in driving successful HIV responses. He commended India’s national AIDS program, highlighting key initiatives like the HIV AIDS Control Act and Test and Treat Policy.
Dr. Rodrico H Ofrin, WHO representative to India, virtually addressed the gathering, emphasizing the crucial elements for successful HIV response programs worldwide, including political leadership, adequate resources, evidence-based actions, inclusivity, and equity. He applauded India’s substantial achievements, citing a significant decline in AIDS-related deaths and new HIV infections since 2010.
The event also witnessed the release and launch of various essential documents and reports, including the SANKALAK: 5th Edition, India HIV Estimates 2022, NACO Calendar 2024, National Communication Strategy, Laboratory Technical Guidelines, Prevention Progress Update 2022-23, and Research Compendium, Volume-I. Stalls showcasing program achievements and interventions were set up, along with a blood donation camp, attracting enthusiastic participation.
Speakers from the community shared personal experiences highlighting the ongoing benefits of services under NACP. Notable figures like Shri Avinash Joshi, Ms. Nidhi Kesarwani, Dr. Siddharth Singh, and Dr. Indranoshee Das were among the esteemed attendees. The event drew over 1500 participants from diverse backgrounds, including people living with HIV (PLHIV) communities, NGOs, armed forces, NCC, development partners, and youth.
