Bhubaneswar, June 6, 2025 — Authorities in Odisha have launched a high-level investigation after five patients reportedly died at a government hospital in Balasore district, allegedly following the administration of a wrong injection. The incident, which has sent shockwaves across the state, occurred at the Fakir Mohan Medical College and Hospital, raising serious concerns about patient safety and medical protocols.
According to initial reports, the patients—who were admitted for various ailments—developed severe complications soon after receiving the injection on Wednesday. Hospital staff immediately alerted senior officials when the patients’ conditions deteriorated rapidly. Despite urgent medical intervention, all five patients succumbed within hours.
District Collector Ashish Thakare confirmed that a probe has been ordered to ascertain the exact cause of the deaths. “We have constituted a special team to investigate the matter thoroughly. Strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty of negligence,” he stated. The hospital authorities have also suspended the staff members directly involved in administering the injection, pending the outcome of the inquiry.
Relatives of the deceased staged protests outside the hospital, demanding justice and accountability. Many expressed outrage over what they described as a “tragic lapse in medical care.” The local police have registered a case, and statements from witnesses, hospital staff, and the victims’ families are being recorded as part of the investigation.
Preliminary findings suggest that the wrong medication may have been administered due to a mix-up in the hospital pharmacy or a lapse in following standard operating procedures. However, officials emphasized that the exact cause will be determined only after a detailed forensic examination and review of medical records.
The Odisha Health Department has assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure such incidents are not repeated. Health Minister Niranjan Pujari expressed condolences to the bereaved families and promised stringent action based on the probe’s findings.
