Bilaspur – Former Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister TS Singh Deo has called for a comprehensive investigation into the recent deaths of two infants following their vaccination at an immunisation camp in Bilaspur district. This demand comes amid controversy and differing opinions about the cause of these tragic deaths.
On Sunday, Singh Deo urged for an immediate probe into the incidents, describing the situation as “very serious.” He met with the grieving families and emphasized the need for transparency and accountability. Singh Deo has requested the sealing of the entire batch of vaccines used and called for an official inquiry to determine the cause of death. In response, the opposition has formed a six-member committee led by Kota MLA Atal Shrivastava to scrutinize the events.
Health officials have asserted that the deaths are not linked to the vaccinations. According to Bilaspur District Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. Prabhat Shrivastava, eight children were vaccinated on August 30. Tragically, a two-day-old infant who received the BCG vaccine died the same day, and a two-month-old child who was administered the Pentavalent-I vaccine passed away the following day. Six other children from the same village, who were also vaccinated, are reported to be in good health and under ongoing medical observation.
Dr. Shrivastava suggested that the cause of death might be related to infections or pneumonia rather than the vaccines themselves. He emphasized that no prior complaints had been recorded for the 5,000 doses of BCG and 10,000 doses of Pentavalent vaccines included in the batch. Nevertheless, as a precautionary measure, the use of this vaccine consignment has been suspended until further investigation.
Former Bilaspur MLA Shailesh Pandey has criticized the BJP for its silence on the matter and has accused the party of attempting to shift the blame onto the vaccination process. The situation remains tense, with heightened scrutiny on the vaccination practices and the health department’s response to the deaths.
As the investigation unfolds, the focus will be on ensuring the safety of immunisation practices and addressing the concerns of the affected families and the public.
