The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, inaugurated the state-of-the-art KLE Cancer Hospital in Belagavi, Karnataka, today. This facility, established to provide advanced cancer care, marks a significant step forward in addressing the growing challenge of cancer in the country.
During her address, President Murmu highlighted the global and national burden of cancer. She cited a global study that revealed cancer as one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with an estimated 20 million new cases and 9.7 million deaths in 2022. In India, approximately 100 out of every one lakh people are diagnosed with cancer annually. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the incidence of cancer in the country is expected to increase by 13% by 2025 compared to 2020.
The President emphasized the importance of comprehensive care for cancer patients, addressing both their physical and psychological needs. She underscored the role of healthcare professionals in providing not only medical treatment but also empathy and compassion. “Every word of sympathy and compassion that a doctor utters has the power to change the life of their patient for the better,” she remarked.
President Murmu also stressed the urgent need for greater awareness about cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment. She expressed concern about delayed diagnoses, often due to ignorance or financial constraints, which can have fatal consequences. “The fight against diseases such as cancer is a collective effort,” she said, urging stakeholders to work together to create a patient-centric, equitable, and world-class healthcare system.
A significant portion of her speech was dedicated to addressing gender disparities in healthcare. The President pointed out that in many families, the health of boys is prioritized over that of girls, and this unequal treatment extends into adulthood. Women often delay seeking diagnosis and treatment for health issues, particularly cancer, which can have critical repercussions. She urged families to encourage open conversations about women’s health and to ensure timely medical care.
The inauguration of the KLE Cancer Hospital reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare infrastructure in India. Equipped with cutting-edge technology and a multidisciplinary approach, the hospital aims to deliver comprehensive cancer care to patients across Karnataka and beyond.
The President concluded her address by calling for a united effort from families, communities, and the healthcare system to prioritize early detection, provide equitable care, and support patients through their journey. The event was attended by prominent dignitaries, healthcare professionals, and members of the public.
