Raipur, October 26, 2024 — In an inspiring address at the second convocation of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Raipur, President Droupadi Murmu urged doctors to prioritize their health and to serve with compassion and sensitivity, emphasizing the critical role of healthcare professionals in shaping a healthy and advanced India.
Speaking to a gathering of medical graduates and faculty, President Murmu underscored the demands of the medical profession, which often involve working in high-stress environments. “On many occasions, you will be working in a stressful environment. Take care of your health and don’t ignore it. To increase trust and betterment of patients, it is important for you to be healthy and look healthy,” she stated.
President Murmu acknowledged the government’s commitment to expanding healthcare access for all citizens, citing landmark initiatives over the past decade aimed at universal healthcare coverage. “In the last decade, several steps have been taken to provide Universal Health coverage. Affordable and quality medicines are available to the people through Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP). In the last ten years, there has been an increase in the number of seats in medical colleges for MBBS and PG. New AIIMS has also been established,” she explained, highlighting the creation of new AIIMS institutions across India and the increased availability of affordable medicines through the PMBJP initiative.
Additionally, President Murmu stressed the importance of leveraging modern technology to improve healthcare delivery, especially for people living in remote areas. “We have been passing through such an era wherein modern technologies greatly impact the life of humans rapidly. For the welfare of people living in remote areas, such technologies can be used,” she noted, encouraging medical professionals to utilize technological advancements to extend healthcare reach across geographical barriers.
President Murmu called attention to the immense responsibilities placed on medical professionals, whose decisions can directly impact lives. “Medical professionals will play a decisive role in realizing the dream of ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047,” she added, acknowledging their pivotal role in advancing healthcare standards nationwide.
Concluding her address, President Murmu encouraged the new graduates to integrate values of compassion and sensitivity into their practice. “Always include these life values in your work area. This will give you success in your workplace, and your life will be meaningful,” she remarked, reminding the young doctors of the importance of humanity and empathy in their mission to heal.
