Kolkata, July 30, 2025 — President Droupadi Murmu addressed the first-ever convocation ceremony at AIIMS Kalyani, emphasizing the vital importance of continuous learning for medical professionals. In her keynote speech to graduating students, faculty, and dignitaries, President Murmu highlighted the rapidly evolving nature of medical science and underscored that young doctors must remain lifelong learners to keep pace with emerging research and healthcare practices.
Reflecting on the nation’s achievements since independence, President Murmu noted the remarkable increase in India’s average life expectancy from just 32 years to around 70 years, crediting the medical fraternity for their efforts in vaccination and the eradication of diseases such as trachoma. However, she cautioned that modern India still faces formidable health challenges—especially lifestyle-related conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity—and asserted that doctors have a larger role than the government or other stakeholders in addressing these issues.
President Murmu honored the legacy of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, West Bengal’s former Chief Minister, who laid the foundation for the city of Kalyani and remained dedicated to treating patients free of charge throughout his tenure. She called on the AIIMS Kalyani community to emulate Dr. Roy’s spirit of service by providing medical care to the poor and underserved, and by building the institute into a source of national pride.
Congratulating the inaugural graduating class of 48 MBBS students and nine postdoctoral scholars, President Murmu pointed out their special responsibility as founding alumni in shaping the future and reputation of AIIMS Kalyani. She urged new doctors to set an example for the community through their own lifestyle choices, emphasizing that preventive care—through proper diet and daily habits—plays a crucial role in public health. “Advice from a doctor has a powerful influence, but when a doctor lives by that advice, the impact is even stronger,” she remarked.
The ceremony was attended by key officials, including West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav, and dignitaries from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
