As the world gears up to observe World Tuberculosis Day on March 24, President Droupadi Murmu has issued a clarion call for collaborative action to combat tuberculosis (TB) in India. With the nation committed to eliminating TB by 2025, five years ahead of the global target, President Murmu emphasizes the urgency of working together to achieve this ambitious goal.
World Tuberculosis Day serves as an annual reminder to raise awareness about TB and combat the stigma associated with the disease. President Murmu expressed her satisfaction in observing the significance of this day, highlighting its role in increasing public awareness about TB and its global impact.
“In commemorating ‘World Tuberculosis Day’ on 24th March, we aim to elevate public consciousness surrounding Tuberculosis (TB),” remarked President Murmu in her message. “This occasion serves to inform the masses about the far-reaching consequences of TB, shed light on the challenges in disease control, and rally support for preventive measures.”
India, bearing a staggering burden of 2.8 million TB cases, accounts for 27 percent of the global TB burden, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In response to this pressing health crisis, India has set a bold target of eliminating TB by 2025, a significant acceleration from the global target of 2030.
President Murmu underlined the critical importance of early detection, treatment, and prevention in the fight against TB. By emphasizing the need for concerted efforts, she urged individuals and organizations alike to join forces in making India TB-free.
“I urge everyone to work together to make India TB-free and put all efforts to achieve this goal,” reiterated President Murmu, emphasizing the collective responsibility in achieving this monumental objective.
As India redoubles its efforts to combat TB and eradicate the disease from its shores, President Murmu’s call for unity underscores the importance of a coordinated approach involving government agencies, healthcare professionals, civil society organizations, and individuals. With concerted action and unwavering commitment, India stands poised to realize its vision of a TB-free nation, ensuring a healthier future for all its citizens.
