New research published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology has highlighted concerning findings regarding the use of topical corticosteroids in treating inflammatory skin conditions. The study indicates that higher doses of these commonly used medications may significantly increase the risks of osteoporosis and bone fractures associated with it.

While systemic corticosteroids have long been known to impact bone health, the impact of topical corticosteroids on bones has been uncertain. This recent study, however, has established a clear connection, especially during prolonged exposure periods. The research points to a heightened risk, particularly among young individuals and women.

Chia-Yu Chu, the corresponding author from National Taiwan University Hospital and National Taiwan University College of Medicine, emphasized the importance of cautious use of topical corticosteroids in managing inflammatory skin conditions. Chu highlighted that clinicians should be attentive to these potential side effects.

In the study encompassing 129,682 cases of osteoporosis and 34,999 major osteoporotic fracture (MOF) cases, matched with control groups, a direct relationship emerged between long-term use of topical corticosteroids and the occurrence of osteoporosis and MOF.

For instance, in a span of five years, compared to no doses, cumulative low, medium, and high doses of topical corticosteroids were associated with 1.22-, 1.26-, and 1.34-times higher odds of developing osteoporosis. Correspondingly, these doses correlated with 1.12-, 1.19-, and 1.29-times higher odds of experiencing MOF. Notably, women exhibited higher risks than men for both osteoporosis and MOF. Additionally, individuals under 50 years old faced a heightened risk of osteoporosis compared to other age groups.

These findings underscore the need for careful consideration and monitoring of the use of topical corticosteroids, especially for extended periods, to mitigate the potential risks they pose to bone health.
