New Delhi, January 29: More than 85.97 million people have received free treatments worth Rs 1.2 lakh crore under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), according to the latest government data. The landmark healthcare scheme, launched in 2018, continues to provide financial protection to millions of deprived rural families and urban workers across India.
World’s Largest Health Assurance Scheme PM-JAY is recognized as the world’s largest health assurance initiative, offering comprehensive secondary and tertiary care hospitalization benefits of up to Rs 5 lakh per family annually. It ensures financial security for economically disadvantaged individuals, covering a wide range of medical procedures and hospitalization expenses.
State-wise Beneficiaries According to the PM-JAY dashboard, Tamil Nadu leads in the number of beneficiaries, with an impressive 90,49,496 individuals availing of the benefits. Other top-performing states include:
- Karnataka: 66,04,849
- Rajasthan: 57,41,363
- Kerala: 54,64,674
- Andhra Pradesh: 49,67,217
- Gujarat: 45,46,832
Lakshadweep reported the lowest number of beneficiaries, with just 780 individuals utilizing the scheme.
Key Features of PM-JAY One of the major highlights of PM-JAY is that it imposes no cap on family size or age, ensuring broad accessibility. The scheme also covers pre-existing conditions from day one, allowing patients to receive treatment immediately after enrollment. The services include:
- Hospitalization costs, including surgeries and ICU charges
- Diagnostic services and physician’s fees
- Medicines and medical consumables
- Pre-hospitalization expenses and post-hospitalization follow-up care (up to 15 days)
Ayushman Cards and Hospital Network As of January 29, more than 365.4 million Ayushman Cards have been issued to beneficiaries. Uttar Pradesh leads in card issuance with 5,19,78,317 cards, while Lakshadweep has the lowest count at 35,343. To facilitate smooth implementation, 31,077 public and private hospitals are empanelled under PM-JAY across India.
Ayushman Vay Vandana: A New Initiative for Senior Citizens On October 29, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the Ayushman Vay Vandana scheme, an extension of the flagship Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). The new initiative aims to provide senior citizens with dedicated healthcare benefits, offering a separate cover of Rs 5 lakh per year for individuals above a certain age bracket.
