New Delhi, July 11, 2025: On the occasion of World Population Day, Union Health Minister JP Nadda underscored the pivotal role of planned parenthood in advancing maternal and child health across India. In a message shared via social media, Nadda reiterated that family planning remains a cornerstone of the nation’s public health strategy, especially as India’s population surpasses 1.46 billion, making it the world’s most populous country.

This year’s World Population Day theme, “Healthy Timing and Spacing of Pregnancy for the Health and Well-being of Mother and Child,” places special emphasis on the importance of choosing the right time for parenthood. The official slogan for 2025, “माँ बनने की उम्र वही, जब तन और मन की तैयारी सही” (“The right age to become a mother is when the mind and the body are ready”), highlights the need for both physical and emotional preparedness in making decisions about parenthood.

Nadda stated, “The slogan emphasises the importance of informed and empowered decisions for parenthood with physical and emotional preparedness.” He also pointed to the government’s efforts in expanding access to family planning services through initiatives like the Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, which are providing essential resources to families nationwide. “These centres are empowering families and paving the way for a healthier India,” he added.

Poonam Muttreja, Executive Director of the Population Foundation of India, echoed the call for a shift in perspective, noting that India’s population trajectory represents an opportunity rather than a crisis. “If we invest in women, young people, and address the needs of our growing elderly population, India’s population story can be one of possibility,” Muttreja said. She highlighted the country’s declining fertility rate and stressed that true development comes not from coercion, but from empowering individuals—especially women—to make informed choices about their bodies and lives.

Experts and policymakers agree that quality healthcare, education, skilling, and job creation are vital to harnessing India’s demographic potential. The focus, they say, should remain on enabling informed choices and supporting families through robust health infrastructure and accessible family planning services.

“World Population Day serves as a platform to raise awareness about family planning and renew our commitment to addressing population-related challenges,” Nadda posted.
