The resurgence of coffee enemas as a wellness trend has sparked concern among medical professionals, who caution that the risks far outweigh any purported benefits. The practice gained traction in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with figures like Florence Nightingale reportedly using them for pain relief during wartime shortages of opioids. Claims vs. Evidence

Advocates of coffee enemas claim they can detoxify the body, stimulate the liver, boost immunity, and alleviate constipation. However, medical research does not support these assertions. Enemas, in general, should be avoided in individuals with certain medical conditions, including pregnancy, gastrointestinal disorders, recent surgery, kidney or heart disease, and immunosuppression.

Medical Advice and Safer Alternatives

Experts strongly advise against the use of coffee enemas for detoxification or regular colon cleansing. Instead, they recommend maintaining gut health through a diet rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, fermented foods, and adequate hydration. For occasional constipation, safer options include dietary adjustments and over-the-counter laxatives or stool softeners.
