Chandigarh, June 17, 2025 — In anticipation of the 11th International Day of Yoga, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh is set to break its own record for the largest gathering of healthcare workers practicing the common yoga protocol. With preparations in full swing, the institute is rallying healthcare professionals from across the tricity to join its June 21 celebrations, emphasizing yoga’s role in fostering team spirit and enhancing clinical service delivery.
Last year, PGIMER set a benchmark with 1,924 healthcare workers participating in a yoga event, earning official recognition from the Asia Book of Records. This year, enthusiasm has surged even higher, with over 3,000 registrations already recorded for the forthcoming event. Prof. Vivek Lal, Director of PGIMER, has called upon healthcare workers to participate, highlighting the importance of collective engagement for quality patient care.
Pre-event Activities and Community Engagement
The PGIMER Yoga Centre has been conducting daily 45-minute yoga sessions for caregivers since June 1, as part of pre-celebration activities. Regular yoga sessions for caregivers are a staple at PGIMER, held twice a week throughout the year. The current initiative also includes a yoga summer camp for children, broadening the reach of yoga within the community.
Comprehensive Arrangements for the Event
Medical Superintendent Prof. Vipin Kaushal assured that all arrangements are in place for the event. In case of inclement weather, the celebration will be relocated to Zakir Hall, ensuring that the event proceeds smoothly regardless of conditions.
Yoga as a Cornerstone of Holistic Healthcare
Dr. Akshay Anand, Professor in-charge of the yoga centre, underscored yoga’s evidence-based benefits for both mental and physical health. He noted that yoga helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, supports the management of chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes, alleviates chronic back pain, and improves posture. To promote work-life balance, PGIMER has implemented “Y-break” sessions across more than 19 departments.
Research and Integration into Patient Care
PGIMER is actively integrating yoga into holistic healthcare and research, with several studies underway to explore its benefits for patient care, treatment outcomes, and rehabilitation. The yoga centre offers a well-equipped facility for healthcare workers, staff, faculty, and patients, guided by experienced trainers.
