Chandigarh, June 17, 2025 — The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has announced a major digital transformation initiative aimed at enhancing patient experience and streamlining hospital operations. The highlight of this initiative is the launch of a new smart mobile application, developed in collaboration with C-DAC Noida, expected to be available by the end of the year.
The innovative app will integrate advanced features such as real-time indoor mapping, QR code-based patient identification, and crowd management tools. These functionalities are designed to simplify hospital navigation, reduce patient wait times, and make hospital visits smoother and more efficient. “This app will transform how we serve our patients and manage hospital systems. It is designed to make hospital visits smoother, more efficient, and patient-friendly,” said Prof. Vivek Lal, Director of PGIMER.
Prof. Lal also highlighted significant progress in the institute’s digital journey, including the complete digitization of the hospital information system. Processes such as indenting and medicine procurement under schemes like Ayushman Bharat are now handled entirely online, ensuring greater transparency and efficiency.
On the infrastructure front, PGIMER is advancing the Rs 987 crore Sarangpur Project, which will feature a new 100-seat medical college, modern OPDs capable of handling 16,000 patients, and a 200-bed emergency block. Additional developments include a trolleyway to facilitate patient transfers between high-traffic blocks and a soon-to-open doctors’ cafeteria.
To address growing patient loads, especially in emergency and trauma care, PGIMER has secured approval to recruit 300 ex-servicemen for campus security through outsourcing over the next four to five months. The institute has also recruited 82 new faculty members, including under the EWS reservation, reinforcing its commitment to transparency and meritocracy.
Prof. Lal spotlighted Project Sarathi, PGIMER’s flagship NSS student-led patient navigation initiative. With over 6,400 active volunteers across 34 states, the Sarathi model is set for expansion to 1,467 hospitals nationwide under MyBharat.gov.in, furthering the institute’s mission to mobilize youth for compassionate care.
