New Delhi – A parliamentary panel has called for a significant overhaul of the regulatory landscape for AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) drugs, advocating for a single, independent drug controller and uniform licensing across all states. The recommendation comes from the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare, which aims to enhance the quality, safety, and efficacy of traditional medicine in India.
In its 165th report on the Demands for Grants 2025-26 of the Ministry of AYUSH, the committee, chaired by Rajya Sabha member Prof. Ram Gopal Yadav, highlighted the pressing need to consolidate all AYUSH drug-related standard-setting processes under a single, independent drug controller. This move is intended to streamline regulations and ensure consistent quality control nationwide.
The panel also emphasized the importance of implementing a uniform licensing process across all states to standardize drug formulations and prevent inconsistencies. This measure seeks to address the current disparities in licensing practices, which can lead to variations in the quality and safety of AYUSH products.
Furthermore, the committee proposed the establishment of a separate body dedicated to overseeing the pharmacovigilance of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Homoeopathy (ASU&H) drugs. This dedicated body would play a crucial role in monitoring and reporting adverse drug reactions, thereby enhancing patient safety.
To further strengthen the regulatory framework, the panel recommended enhanced scientific testing and stricter control over misleading advertisements. These measures are aimed at ensuring that AYUSH products meet rigorous quality standards and that consumers are protected from false or misleading claims.
