Islamabad, August 19, 2024 – Authorities in Pakistan reported on Monday a suspected case of Monkeypox (mpox) in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, marking the fourth suspected case in the region.

A 47-year-old resident of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, who had recently traveled from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, has been admitted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad, displaying symptoms consistent with mpox. Dr. Nasim Akhtar, the focal person at PIMS, confirmed that the patient is exhibiting classic symptoms of the virus and has been placed in isolation within a designated ward to prevent potential spread.

This new suspected case comes after three previous mpox cases were reported in Pakistan’s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. In response, authorities have heightened screening measures at airports and other entry points to better manage and contain the spread of the virus.

On Saturday, the Pakistani government unveiled a comprehensive policy to address the mpox threat, ensuring that diagnostic laboratory facilities are operational in all provinces as well as the federal capital. The policy aims to bolster the country’s response to the outbreak and facilitate timely diagnosis and treatment.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a crucial meeting to review the ongoing situation, emphasizing the need for stringent monitoring and effective screening protocols at all transit points. The Prime Minister’s directive underscores the government’s commitment to controlling the outbreak and safeguarding public health.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the recent mpox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, highlighting the need for global vigilance and coordinated efforts to combat the virus.

As the situation develops, authorities continue to monitor the outbreak closely, urging the public to remain informed and adhere to health advisories to mitigate the risk of further transmission.
