ISLAMABAD, July 2 — Pakistan has reported its 14th case of polio so far in 2025, according to the country’s Health Ministry, as authorities intensify efforts to combat the crippling disease. The latest case was detected in a 19-month-old girl from the North Waziristan district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where health officials confirmed the presence of type 1 wild poliovirus.

Of the 14 cases recorded this year, eight have originated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, four in Sindh province, and one each in Punjab and the Gilgit-Baltistan region. The continued emergence of new cases underscores the persistent challenge Pakistan faces in eradicating polio, despite years of vaccination drives and international support.

In response to the new case, special polio vaccination campaigns are set to launch in 11 union councils of North Waziristan, aiming to curb further transmission of the virus. Health officials emphasize the importance of these targeted immunization efforts, particularly in high-risk areas where vaccine coverage has lagged due to security concerns and logistical barriers.

Pakistan remains one of the few countries in the world where polio is still endemic, with health authorities and international partners working to address misinformation, community resistance, and access issues that hinder vaccination campaigns.
