As National Nutrition Week unfolds from September 1 to September 7, experts are urging the public to rethink their consumption of packaged fruit juices, which are often marketed as “healthy” but may pose significant health risks. This year’s theme, “Nutritious Diets for Everyone,” serves as a timely reminder to critically assess the true nutritional value of what we consume.

Despite their appealing labels, packaged juices are often low in actual fruit content and high in added sugars, posing serious risks to health, including diabetes and obesity, which are growing concerns in India. Experts warn that these products are far from the health boosters they are marketed to be.

“Packaged juices are not healthy at all. They are high in sugars and low in nutritional value. When it comes to nutrition, the percentage of fruit pulp is low, while artificial flavours, stabilisers, sugar, sweeteners, and fructose syrup are generally very high,” stated Dr. Shweta Gupta, Unit Head of Dietetics at Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh.

Dr. Gupta emphasizes the importance of choosing whole fruits over both fresh and packaged juices. “When juice is prepared, the pulp is removed, and along with it, essential vitamins, minerals, and fibres are lost. Hence, to maintain good health, avoid juices, especially packaged ones,” she advised.

Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Sukhvinder Singh Saggu, Director of Minimal Access, GI & Bariatric Surgery at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, highlighted the broader health risks associated with packaged fruit juices. “Consuming packaged fruit juices can lead to weight gain, insulin resistance, and other health issues,” he cautioned.

Dr. Saggu also noted that the processing methods used in making these juices often strip them of essential nutrients and enzymes. “Despite their healthy branding, packaged fruit juices are often loaded with added sugars and stripped of essential nutrients and fibres that whole fruits provide. The processing involved in making these juices often destroys beneficial enzymes and reduces the overall quality of the product,” he explained.

The takeaway from these expert opinions is clear: while packaged juices may seem convenient, their health risks far outweigh the benefits. This National Nutrition Week, individuals are encouraged to opt for fresh, whole fruits to ensure a truly nutritious diet.

As the public becomes more health-conscious, it’s crucial to look beyond marketing claims and focus on the actual nutritional content of the foods and beverages we consume. This shift towards healthier choices could play a vital role in combating the rising rates of diet-related illnesses in the country.
