A new term, “Ozempic mouth,” is making headlines as users of the popular weight loss and diabetes drug Ozempic report unexpected changes to their facial appearance. While Ozempic (semaglutide) has been widely praised for its ability to help users shed significant weight-often between 15% and 20% of their body mass-experts are now warning about a range of aesthetic side effects linked to rapid fat loss.

What Is ‘Ozempic Mouth’?

Medical professionals describe “Ozempic mouth” as a hollowing and loosening of the skin around the mouth, resulting from the loss of facial fat. Dr. Ed Robinson, speaking to The Sun, explained that this phenomenon is part of a broader pattern of aesthetic changes seen with rapid weight loss from GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic. These changes include:

  • Deeper nasolabial folds (laughter lines)

  • More pronounced marionette lines (vertical wrinkles from the mouth corners down to the chin)

  • Downturned corners of the mouth

  • Sagging jowls and sunken cheeks

These effects can leave individuals looking prematurely aged or tired, even as they enjoy the health benefits of weight reduction1.

Why Does It Happen?

The rapid loss of fat from the lower face means the skin doesn’t have time to adjust, leading to increased laxity and visible wrinkles. While Ozempic can give a more youthful look by reducing overall body fat, the sudden change in facial structure can have the opposite effect around the mouth and jawline.

Other Related Side Effects

“Ozempic mouth” joins a growing list of aesthetic side effects associated with the drug, including “Ozempic face,” “Ozempic neck,” and even “Ozempic butt.” These terms all refer to the visible changes in skin tightness and fat distribution as a result of significant, rapid weight loss.

Balancing Benefits and Risks

Despite these side effects, many experts emphasize that weight loss with Ozempic can lead to substantial health improvements, such as reduced risk of heart disease and Alzheimer’s. However, they caution that users should be aware of potential changes in appearance and consult with healthcare providers about ways to manage or mitigate these effects.

“With such rapid weight loss, we’re increasingly seeing aesthetic side effects-notably ‘Ozempic face’, ‘Ozempic neck’, and now, what’s being referred to as ‘Ozempic mouth’.”
