East Champaran, Bihar – More than two dozen students of a government school in Bihar’s East Champaran district fell ill on Monday after consuming Albendazole tablets as part of a filariasis eradication campaign.

The incident occurred at Utkramit Madhya Vidyalaya in Koilhara village, located in the Madhuban block. Following the administration of the medication, several children complained of vomiting and stomach pain, leading to widespread panic among parents.

As the news spread, anxious parents gathered at the school and created a ruckus. Tensions escalated, and at one point, the parents held teachers hostage inside the school premises. Authorities quickly intervened to calm the situation.

A medical team promptly arrived at the school and admitted the sick students to the Madhuban Community Health Centre (CHC) for treatment. The affected students, including Anshu Kumari, Aditi Kumari, Jyoti Kumari, Sahida Khatoon, Ladli Praveen, Kusmun Khatoon, Anya Praveen, Sanya Rani, Ranjan Kumar, Sai Raja, Nabi Hasan, Arbaaz Alam, and Qudus Alam, were provided immediate medical care.

Medical officers Avinash Kumar and CHC in-charge Indrajit Kumar ensured that all students received proper treatment. As per the latest reports, the students’ condition has improved, and many have been discharged, while some remain under observation.

Dr. Indrajit Kumar reassured that necessary precautions are being taken under the ongoing Mass Drug Administration campaign. “The condition of all the children is fine, and they are being treated properly. Some children experienced vomiting and stomach pain, but all have been examined and are now stable,” he stated.

The Health Department has launched an investigation to determine whether the adverse reactions were due to medicine intolerance or any administrative lapse in the campaign. Officials are closely monitoring the situation to prevent such incidents in the future.
