In a significant stride towards combating Sickle Cell Anaemia, the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission (NSCAEM) has screened over 3.39 crore individuals since its inception last year. The government reported that a total of 1.12 crore Sickle Cell Status ID cards have been distributed, highlighting the widespread efforts to identify and manage this genetic blood disorder.

On World Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Awareness Day, observed on June 19, numerous events were organized nationwide to raise awareness about SCD and prevent its transmission. The disease, characterized by abnormal red blood cells that take on a sickle shape, can cause blockages in blood vessels, leading to severe health complications. SCD disproportionately affects tribal populations in India, making targeted awareness and screening programs crucial.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare revealed that 44,751 events were held across 17 states and 343 districts under NSCAEM. These events included the screening of 6,15,806 individuals for SCD and the distribution of 2,59,193 Sickle Cell ID cards to those screened. The campaign, which began on June 19, aims to continue these efforts for the next 15 days, targeting to screen 10,00,000 individuals and distribute 3,00,000 Sickle Cell Status ID cards by July 3.

The government’s commitment to fighting Sickle Cell Anaemia is evident in these large-scale initiatives, which are essential for managing and eventually eliminating the disease from affected populations. The ongoing awareness activities will continue to play a critical role in educating communities about SCD and the importance of early detection and management
