Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda reported in the Lok Sabha that over 6 crore people from 17 tribal-dominated states, including Maharashtra, have been screened for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) as part of the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission (NSCAEM). Out of these, 2,16,118 individuals have been confirmed to have SCD, with Maharashtra being one of the states significantly affected.

Launched on July 1, 2023, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the NSCAEM aims to provide affordable and quality care to SCD patients and reduce disease prevalence through awareness, extensive screening of seven crore people in the 0-40 age group in tribal areas by 2025-26, and genetic counseling. Screening is conducted at multiple healthcare levels, from district hospitals to Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAM), which also provide follow-up services, lifestyle counseling, nutritional support, crisis management, and referrals.

In Maharashtra, targeted screening efforts have identified 16,400 cases of SCD and 1.2 lakh cases of the sickle cell trait, largely in high-risk districts with tribal populations. Efforts include testing all pregnant women in these districts and their partners if needed. The state plans to increase screening following the central government’s mission targets.

Medications such as Hydroxyurea have been included in the National Health Mission’s Essential Drugs List to improve access and reduce out-of-pocket costs. The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has also funded 15 Centres of Excellence for SCD across the country to enhance treatment and research.

Genetic counseling cards have been distributed extensively, with over 2.62 crore issued nationwide. Additionally, awareness campaigns and counseling materials are being disseminated to amplify the impact of the mission.

The ministry continues to provide technical and financial support to states and union territories for conducting screenings, drug procurement, and program implementation.
