New Delhi, July 26, 2025:
In a major step towards combating cervical cancer in India, over 10.18 crore women aged 30 years and above have been screened for the disease at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs) across the country. The data, presented to Parliament by Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav during the ongoing Monsoon session, marks a significant government milestone in preventive healthcare.

According to the National NCD Portal, out of the eligible population of 25.42 crore women in this age group, nearly 40% have already been screened as of July 20. India continues to account for 25% of global cervical cancer deaths, a statistic often linked to delayed diagnosis.

The government’s initiative, rolled out under the National Health Mission (NHM), targets women aged 30 to 65. The primary mode of screening is Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA), conducted by trained health workers at Sub-Health Centres and Primary Health Centres within AAMs. Women who test VIA-positive are referred to higher centers for further diagnostic evaluation.

A key driver behind community reach has been the involvement of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs). These workers utilize Community Based Assessment Checklist (CBAC) forms to identify at-risk women, facilitate their participation in screenings, and raise awareness around early detection and healthy lifestyles.

To further accelerate efforts, the Ministry recently launched a time-bound NCD Screening Campaign from February 20 to March 31, boosting the scale and impact of the screening drive.

The government emphasized that these achievements reinforce its strong commitment to comprehensive and preventive healthcare through the Ayushman Arogya Mandirs network.
