In a major stride towards strengthening primary healthcare across India, more than 1.78 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs), formerly known as Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs), are functional nationwide as of July 15, 2025. This extensive network is playing a pivotal role in bringing comprehensive healthcare services closer to the homes of millions.

Comprehensive Primary Care

Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are equipped to deliver 12 packages of comprehensive primary care services, covering communicable and non-communicable diseases, reproductive, maternal, child, and adolescent health, along with other critical health areas. The initiative not only focuses on treatment but also strengthens preventive, promotive, rehabilitative, and curative care through upgraded facilities and trained healthcare teams.

Free Diagnostics for All

Under the National Health Mission’s ‘Free Diagnostics Service Initiative’ (FDSI)—launched in 2015—an expanded range of diagnostic tests are now available free of cost across all public health facilities. Beneficiaries can access 14 essential tests at Sub Health Centres and 63 at Primary Health Centres, ensuring affordable and timely medical diagnosis for all.

Focus on Wellness and Prevention

AAMs also emphasize wellness and preventive healthcare. Activities such as Yoga, cycling, and meditation are regularly organized, reflecting a commitment to holistic wellness. Notably, more than 5.73 crore wellness sessions have been conducted at these centers as of June 30, 2025.

Digital Health Revolution

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is a flagship initiative supporting the integration of health data and continuity of care across facilities. So far, 79.75 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs have been created, and 65.34 crore Electronic Health Records (EHRs) have been linked to various health portals, paving the way for efficient, accessible, and seamless healthcare service delivery.

Investment and Implementation

Each AAM is established and maintained at an estimated cost of Rs.17.03 lakhs, covering both one-time and recurring expenses for the first year. Funding and operational approvals are channelled via the National Health Mission in coordination with State and Union Territories under the annual Program Implementation Plan.

The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, highlighted these milestones in his recent statement to the Lok Sabha, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to robust, accessible healthcare for all citizens.
