Jammu, India – March 21, 2025 – A tense situation has unfolded at Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu, following the alleged detention of an on-duty anaesthesia resident doctor after an altercation with a colleague. The Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) of GMC Jammu has strongly condemned the incident, labeling it an “illegal detention” and a serious breach of protocol.
According to the RDA, the incident occurred on March 17th, when the resident doctor, who was on a 24-hour emergency shift in the ICU, was reportedly taken into police custody by the in-charge of the Police Post GMC Jammu. The association claims that this detention was carried out without proper procedure, and despite the doctor identifying himself as an on-duty medical professional.
The RDA further alleges that the detained doctor, a first-year postgraduate student, was held for three hours, causing him significant distress. They also stated that when senior postgraduate doctors attempted to inquire about the situation, they were met with “rude” behavior from the Sub-Inspector (SI) in charge.
In a formal letter, the RDA has demanded a thorough investigation into the incident and called for disciplinary action against the police officer involved. They are also advocating for the reinforcement of protocols to protect medical professionals from unlawful harassment while on duty.
“Despite being on official duty and clearly identifying himself as a resident doctor, our colleague was wrongfully held in police custody for several hours without justification,”the RDA’s letter stated. “This incident has not only caused severe mental distress to the concerned resident but has also instilled fear in the entire medical community at GMC Jammu.”
The incident has raised concerns about the treatment of healthcare workers, particularly those working in emergency situations. The RDA emphasizes the importance of sensitizing law enforcement personnel to the duties and responsibilities of medical professionals.
