Puri, Odisha—The Odisha government has unveiled a comprehensive health preparedness plan for the upcoming Rath Yatra festival in Puri, aiming to ensure the safety and well-being of millions of devotees expected to gather for the annual event. According to Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling, the administration is deploying 378 medical professionals and setting up 265 hospital beds specifically to handle any medical emergencies that may arise during the festival.
In addition to bolstering medical infrastructure, the government has intensified inspections of food and water safety, resulting in the destruction of unhygienic food items and the reservation of blood units for emergency use. Minor operation theatres have also been established at key locations to provide immediate surgical care if needed. A specialized heat stroke center has been set up to address the health risks associated with the summer heat, and a team from AIIMS Bhubaneswar will offer additional medical support throughout the event.
Public health awareness campaigns are being rolled out to educate attendees about food safety, safe drinking water, and hygiene practices. A dedicated control room will operate round the clock to coordinate health activities and provide assistance to festival-goers.
The robust measures are designed to ensure a healthy and successful Rath Yatra for all participants, reflecting the administration’s commitment to public safety during large-scale religious gatherings.
