Bhubaneswar, February 6: More than 16 million children and women in Odisha are set to receive deworming treatment as part of an extensive health campaign starting on February 10, a senior health official announced on Wednesday.
The Directorate of Family Welfare, in collaboration with UNICEF, is leading the month-long initiative to enhance the health and nutritional well-being of children and women across the state. The campaign is a part of India’s broader National Deworming Day (NDD) program, aimed at reducing worm infestations that can negatively impact growth, development, and overall health.
As per the plan, school teachers, Anganwadi workers, and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) will administer age-appropriate Albendazole, either in suspension or tablet form, to children and young women. Additionally, children aged 9-60 months will receive Vitamin A supplements at routine vaccination sites to strengthen immunity and prevent childhood blindness.
Worm infestations, caused primarily by soil-transmitted helminths, can lead to malnutrition, anemia, and impaired cognitive development, particularly in children. Regular deworming efforts help curb these issues, ensuring better health outcomes for the population.
A state health official emphasized the importance of community participation in making the campaign successful. “This initiative is crucial for improving child health and reducing the burden of malnutrition. We urge parents and caregivers to ensure their children receive the prescribed doses on time,” the official stated.
The deworming drive is expected to significantly contribute to public health improvements in Odisha, complementing ongoing efforts to boost maternal and child welfare.
