Odisha authorities have implemented emergency containment measures following a confirmed outbreak of bird flu (H5N1 avian influenza) in the Puri district. The outbreak was detected after laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the virus in samples collected from Bada Ankula village.
In a decisive move to prevent the spread of the disease, officials have culled over 6,700 birds in the affected area. The culling operation was conducted over the weekend, strictly following the standard operating procedures established by central authorities.
To further contain the outbreak, the movement of live birds in and out of the designated zone has been halted. Rapid response and health teams have been deployed to manage the situation, and additional samples from five nearby villages are currently being tested as a precautionary measure.
Chief District Veterinary Officer Sarat Kumar Behera confirmed the swift deployment of teams and outlined ongoing efforts to monitor and curb the spread. Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik has also reviewed the containment strategies on the ground to ensure the virus does not spread further.
“We are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of the public and prevent any further transmission of the virus,” said a senior official involved in the operation.
