BHUBANESWAR, June 11, 2025 (IANS) — The Odisha Health and Family Welfare Department has launched intensive field operations in Jajpur district following a sudden outbreak of diarrhoea that has claimed three lives and led to the hospitalization of over 200 people in the past two days1.

A state-level multi-sectoral team, comprising doctors, microbiologists, and food safety inspectors, has been dispatched to Jajpur to investigate the cause of the outbreak. Additional medical teams have been sent to support local hospitals, including the Jajpur District Headquarters Hospital and peripheral health centers, to ensure prompt treatment for all affected patients1.

The outbreak has particularly affected areas such as Dharmashala, Vyasanagar municipality, Danagadi, Rasulpur, and Korei blocks. Rapid Action Teams, consisting of medical officers, microbiologists, epidemiologists, and officials from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, are working on the ground to monitor and respond to new cases1.

Critical patients are being treated by specialists from Maharaja Jajati Keshari Medical College and Hospital in Jajpur, while six medicine specialists from SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack have also been deputed to the district. The most serious cases are being referred to SCB Medical College in Cuttack, where the superintendent has been instructed to remain vigilant about the treatment of referral cases1.

To prevent further spread, the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation teams are disinfecting drinking water sources, and food inspection and disease surveillance teams are working at the grassroots level. Health sub-centers, ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, and multi-purpose health workers have been provided with halogen tablets, medicines, ORS packets, and awareness materials for distribution among the community1.

The state government has urged residents to take precautionary measures, including avoiding outside food, drinking safe water, and practicing good hygiene. According to the Jajpur district administration, two people from Jajpur district and one from Anandpur in Keonjhar district have died so far. Over 200 patients remain hospitalized across the district1.
