Kerala is witnessing a concerning surge in cancer rates, with health experts attributing the trend to high levels of obesity, alcohol consumption, and tobacco use among its population. Recent data indicate that 37% of people aged 15-49 in Kerala are classified as obese, a figure significantly higher than the national average. In addition, 12.4% of men in the state consume alcohol, and tobacco use remains widespread.

Medical professionals warn that these lifestyle factors are major contributors to the state’s escalating cancer burden. Obesity is linked to several types of cancer, including breast, colorectal, and endometrial cancers. Meanwhile, alcohol and tobacco are well-established carcinogens, responsible for cancers of the oral cavity, throat, liver, and more.

Experts emphasize that Kerala’s rapid urbanization, changing dietary habits, and sedentary lifestyles are exacerbating these risk factors. They call for urgent public health interventions, including awareness campaigns, stricter regulation of alcohol and tobacco sales, and community-based programs to promote healthy eating and physical activity.

“The high prevalence of obesity and substance use is a ticking time bomb for Kerala’s health system. Without immediate action, cancer cases will continue to climb,” a leading oncologist warned.
