Kolkata, West Bengal – In a deeply troubling incident that has sent shockwaves through the local medical community, a 24-year-old nurse was found dead, hanging from the ceiling in a private nursing home in Singur, Hooghly district. The episode has ignited controversy and prompted a demand from the bereaved family for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, citing suspicions of sexual assault and murder.

The young nurse, a resident of Nandigram in Purba Medinipur district, had reportedly joined the nursing home only four days before her tragic demise. According to family allegations, she was killed after uncovering alleged irregularities in the facility’s operations, a claim that has been strongly denied by the nursing home administration. Officials at the nursing home maintain that the death was a suicide.

Authorities were notified of the incident on August 13, after the victim’s father received a late-night call from the nursing home with news of his daughter’s apparent suicide. Upon arriving at the scene, the police initiated a preliminary investigation and sent the body for post-mortem examination at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. However, this decision was met with resistance from the family, who declared a complete lack of faith in the state police and requested that the autopsy be held at a central facility under judicial supervision.

Following the family’s protest, the police agreed to transport the nurse’s body to AIIMS Kalyani, where the autopsy was performed in the presence of a magistrate and family members, with the entire process recorded on video. The autopsy report is currently pending, and the exact cause of death remains undetermined until further forensic analysis is completed.

Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the case—Radhagobindo Ghatan (21) and Subir Ghora (32)—both of whom remain in custody. Meanwhile, the family has voiced its intent to pursue justice through all available legal avenues, including potentially moving to court should their demand for a CBI probe not be met.

State Minister Becharam Manna, serving as the local TMC MLA, has assured that strict action will be taken should the ongoing police investigation uncover any evidence of foul play.

This incident occurs almost a year after a similar, highly publicized case involving the rape and murder of a PG medical student at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
