Kolkata, January 28, 2025 – Amid concerns following a recent outbreak of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) in Maharashtra, which recorded one death and 110 suspected cases, the West Bengal Health Department has assured citizens that there is no cause for alarm in the state.

In a statement on Tuesday, Health Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam emphasized that Guillain-Barre Syndrome is not a new disease and there is no evidence of fresh cases in West Bengal since December 2024.

“Sporadic reports of Guillain-Barre Syndrome have occurred in the past, but there is nothing to panic about in Bengal,” said Nigam. “This is neither a new disease nor have there been any recent cases in the state. Our observations align with findings confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO).”

Nigam noted that GBS typically affects individuals under 15 years of age, although the condition can occur in other demographics. He assured the public that the state’s medical teams are actively monitoring the situation and remain vigilant.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a rare neurological disorder characterized by rapid-onset muscle weakness, caused by the immune system attacking the peripheral nervous system. Symptoms may include tingling, weakness, and difficulty breathing in severe cases.

The Maharashtra outbreak has raised concerns nationwide, with the state reporting 110 suspected cases, 88 of which are in Pune. Of these, 73 are men and 37 women, with 13 patients requiring ventilatory support. Maharashtra’s Health Department has urged residents to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms arise.

In West Bengal, health officials are focused on ensuring early detection and response mechanisms. “We are prepared to act swiftly if any cases are reported,” Nigam said.
