Amid reports of a Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China, Indian health authorities have reassured the public that there is no cause for concern. Media reports and social media posts have highlighted a rapid spread of the virus in China, sparking comparisons to the Covid-19 pandemic five years ago, with some even claiming hospitals and crematories are overwhelmed.

“The spread of HMPV in China is like any other respiratory virus,” said Dr. Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services (DGHS), during a media briefing on Friday. “There is no need for alarm about the present situation.”

Dr. Goel explained that HMPV generally causes flu-like symptoms, particularly in young children and the elderly. He emphasized that winter is typically associated with an increase in respiratory infections, and Indian hospitals are well-prepared for such seasonal surges with adequate supplies and beds.

Furthermore, he clarified that data for December 2024 shows no significant rise in respiratory outbreaks within India.

Regular Precautions Advised

While there is no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV, Dr. Goel suggested simple preventive measures to avoid the spread of respiratory infections:

  • Avoid close contact with others if you have a cough or cold.
  • Use a dedicated handkerchief or towel when coughing or sneezing.
  • Take standard over-the-counter medications for cold or fever as needed.

“Otherwise, there is nothing to be alarmed about the present situation,” he added.

HMPV in China and Global Context

Chinese media reports, citing data from the Chinese CDC, indicate an increase in HMPV cases, particularly among children aged 14 and below. The state broadcaster CCTV reported fluctuating and rising positivity rates for the virus in December.

HMPV, discovered in 2001, belongs to the Pneumoviridae family, which also includes the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). It can cause upper and lower respiratory infections in people of all ages, but it primarily affects young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically include cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath, with an incubation period of three to five days.

Global Perspective on HMPV

In 2023, HMPV was detected in several countries, including the Netherlands, Britain, Finland, Australia, Canada, the US, and China. Preventive measures like wearing masks, frequent handwashing, and boosting immunity have been recommended to mitigate the risk of infection.

Conclusion

Indian health officials have reiterated that there is no immediate threat from the HMPV outbreak in China. Citizens are encouraged to follow standard hygiene practices and remain vigilant, especially during the winter season, but there is no need for panic.

As always, those experiencing severe symptoms should consult a healthcare provider promptly.
