In a move to address ongoing concerns regarding unpaid stipends, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued show-cause notices to 198 medical colleges across India — 115 government institutions and 83 private ones. The notice follows the failure of these institutions to submit required details on stipends paid to undergraduate (UG) interns, postgraduate (PG) residents, and senior residents in super specialities for the fiscal year 2023-24.

The NMC’s action comes after numerous reports from medical interns and resident doctors who claimed they have either not received their stipends or have only been paid a fraction of the amount promised. This issue has raised alarm among the medical community, with many healthcare professionals expressing frustration over the delayed or insufficient payments.

The NMC is currently reviewing the information provided by the medical colleges, with the possibility of imposing penalties if it is confirmed that the stipends have been withheld or reduced. An official notice from the NMC indicates that the issue is being treated with utmost seriousness. Medical colleges listed in the notice have been given an opportunity to explain why they should not face sanctions for their failure to comply with the stipend disclosure requirement.

The issue of unpaid stipends has been a point of contention for several years. In response to growing concerns, the Supreme Court had previously directed the NMC to gather and share information on stipends provided to medical interns and residents. This latest development marks a significant step in addressing the issue, with the NMC ensuring accountability and transparency in the payment of stipends.

The move has been welcomed by medical professionals, many of whom have long advocated for fair compensation for their work, particularly given the demanding nature of internships and residency. It remains to be seen how the NMC will enforce penalties, but it is clear that medical colleges will face serious repercussions if they fail to rectify the situation promptly.

As the review process continues, medical interns and residents are hopeful that the NMC’s actions will lead to a more transparent and accountable system for stipend payments in the future.
