The National Medical Commission (NMC) has unveiled a draft of the Teachers Eligibility Qualifications in Medical Institutions Regulations, 2024 (TEQ 2024). Released on January 17, the proposed guidelines aim to bring consistency to eligibility criteria for teaching appointments and promotions in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education across India.
The draft regulations set forth standardized qualifications and experience requirements for faculty roles, aiming to bolster the quality of medical education nationwide. This includes provisions for appointments to key positions like Deans, Principals, and Medical Superintendents, with an upper age limit of 70 years for these roles.
Key Highlights of TEQ 2024
- Faculty Eligibility and Promotion: Clear criteria for appointments and promotions in medical colleges to ensure teaching faculty meet requisite standards.
- Deans and Directors: Candidates must possess a postgraduate medical degree and at least 10 years of teaching experience, including five years as a professor.
- Medical Superintendents: Similar qualifications and experience are required, with a focus on hospital departments.
- Senior Residents: Defined as tenure positions (up to three years), with qualifications and age limits varying by specialty.
- Transitional Provisions: Special relaxations for faculty-shortage subjects like Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry to address immediate needs.
Relaxations and Flexibility
The draft also offers transitional pathways for diploma holders and non-teaching medical officers to shift into teaching roles, provided they fulfill specific experience and training requirements.
Feedback Invited
Stakeholders are encouraged to review the draft regulations and submit their feedback, objections, or suggestions via email within seven days of its release. Following this consultation period, the finalized guidelines will be notified in the Gazette of India.
The NMC retains the authority to amend the regulations at any time, ensuring they remain responsive to evolving needs in medical education.
This significant move by the NMC is expected to standardize medical teaching practices and strengthen the overall framework of medical education in India. Stakeholders are urged to engage actively in the feedback process to help shape the future of medical education.
