In a bid to tackle the pressing healthcare challenges faced by medical students and professionals, the National Medical Commission (NMC) in conjunction with the National Task Force on Mental Health and Well-being of Medical Students (NTF) has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative named “My Health, My Rights.” This initiative was launched on April 7th, 2024, commemorating World Health Day, with a focus on providing comprehensive mental health support services and resources.
Recognizing the rigorous demands and tolls on the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of healthcare providers, the “My Health, My Rights” initiative aims to serve as a robust support system. Through confidential counseling, therapy, and various resources, it seeks to empower medical students and professionals to prioritize their health effectively.
Dr. De Vogel Malik, Member of the NMC’s EMRB and Head of the Publication Division, emphasized the significance of this initiative in addressing healthcare challenges. “My Health, My Rights” stands as a pioneering effort, coordinated by the Anti-Ragging Committee of the NMC, aimed at safeguarding the well-being of medical students and professionals alike.
The initiative underscores the importance of individuals taking ownership of their health by engaging in activities such as exercise, nutrition, meditation, social interaction, and environmental stewardship. Moreover, holistic wellness programs focusing on physical health, emotional resilience, and work-life balance, including yoga and stress management workshops, will be introduced.
Dr. BN Dangadhar, Chairman of the National Medical Commission, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stressing the necessity of prioritizing the health and well-being of medical professionals. Aruna Vanikar, President of HOMER, NMC, highlighted the urgency to destigmatize mental health issues within the medical community, advocating for a culture of openness and support.
Additionally, Dr. Vijender Malik emphasized the ethical imperative of equitable access to healthcare services and promoting well-being for all. As World Health Day 2024 is commemorated, the commitment to “My Health, My Rights” is reaffirmed, ensuring that every individual within the medical field can thrive and fulfill their potential.
Moreover, addressing the alarming cases of depression and suicides among medical students, the NMC’s Anti-Ragging Committee had previously established the National Task Force on Mental Health and Well-being of Medical Students. Comprising 15 members of the Apex Medical Commission, this task force is dedicated to studying existing literature and data on mental health issues, analyzing contributing factors, and proposing evidence-based strategies for improvement. The task force is set to submit its final report by May 31st, 2024, with progress reports provided monthly.
As the medical community joins forces to address these critical issues, the launch of “My Health, My Rights” marks a significant step towards ensuring the health and well-being of those dedicated to caring for others.
