New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a firm warning to medical colleges across India, threatening a Rs. 50,000 fine for those failing to submit detailed reports on stipends paid to MBBS interns. This action comes after repeated notices from the commission, highlighting ongoing concerns about compliance.

The NMC’s recent public notice underscores the seriousness of the issue, revealing that despite multiple reminders sent out in November and December of the previous year, a significant number of medical institutions have yet to provide the required stipend information for the 2023-24 financial year.

This move by the NMC is occurring shortly before the next supreme court hearing on the payment of stipends, scheduled for April 8th. The supreme court had previously ordered the NMC to gather and submit this stipend information.

According to the information that has been released, the NMC has previously released multiple public notices, requesting the information. The most recent notice is giving the medical colleges untill April 10th to submit the information, with the penalty of the 50,000 Rupee fine being imposed.

The NMC has the authority to issue much larger fines, regarding non complience. There are those that are questioning the seriousness of the NMC, when the fine is only 50,000 rupees.

“It has been observed that in spite of four public notices issued through the NMC website, some medical colleges are yet to fill up the Annual Declaration Form on the portal. This has been viewed seriously by the Competent Authority at NMC,” stated the public notice.1

The NMC secretary has communicated with the principal/dean of all colleges, and also sending the information to principal secretaries and medical education departments of all states, regarding the extension of the deadline, and the imposing of the fine.

The NMC is taking this action, due to the orders of the supreme court, and to enforce the regulations regarding the payment of stipends to medical interns.
