Kolkata, May 21, 2025:
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a show-cause notice to the state-run Nil Ratan Sircar (NRS) Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, highlighting a series of serious irregularities and lapses in both healthcare management and academic infrastructure. The notice draws parallels to similar issues previously identified at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, another prominent state-run institution that made headlines last year following a tragic incident.
Key Findings and Allegations
According to the NMC’s notice, 18 out of 20 departments at NRS Medical College were found to be deficient. The commission specifically cited a video from August 1, 2024, showing an overcrowded examination hall where students were seen talking to each other during the exam, raising concerns about academic integrity and supervision.
Additionally, the NMC pointed out critical staff shortages, noting that senior resident doctor positions were vacant in essential departments such as anatomy, biochemistry, forensic medicine, and physiology. Other lapses included:
-
Bed occupancy rates at only 73%
-
Non-availability and lack of uploading of cadaver data in clinical records
-
Deficiencies in the reporting of bed occupancy data
The commission has warned the NRS authorities that failure to provide a satisfactory response to these concerns could result in a financial penalty of Rs 8 crore.
No Official Response Yet
As of the time of reporting, neither the Principal nor the Vice Principal & Medical Superintendent of NRS Medical College had issued an official statement regarding the show-cause notice.
The NMC’s action comes in the wake of heightened scrutiny of medical institutions in Kolkata, particularly after the high-profile case at R.G. Kar Medical College last year, which brought to light significant safety and administrative concerns.
