:
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has officially released the Medical Institutions (Qualifications of Faculty) Regulations, 2025, introducing significant changes to the eligibility criteria for medical faculty across India. The regulations, published in the official Gazette on June 30, 2025, outline new standards for faculty appointments in medical colleges and aim to address evolving needs in medical education.
Key Highlights of the New Regulations:
-
Non-Medical Faculty Eligibility Expanded:
The NMC has relaxed norms for appointing non-medical faculty. Individuals without an MBBS degree but holding a Master of Science (MSc) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Medical Anatomy, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Physiology, Medical Pharmacology, or Medical Microbiology are now eligible to teach these subjects, provided their qualifications are obtained through regular, in-campus courses from recognized medical institutions. -
Diploma and DNB Holders Now Eligible:
Diploma holders can be appointed as Assistant Professors in broad and surgical specialties if they were appointed as Senior Residents before June 8, 2017, with four years’ experience, or have six years’ cumulative experience as Specialists or Medical Officers in recognized government institutions. Additionally, Diplomate of National Board (DNB) degree holders in broad and super specialties are now considered equivalent to MD/MS, provided their training was in institutions with 500 or more beds. Those from smaller institutions must complete an additional year of senior residency. -
Teaching Hospital Bed Requirement Reduced:
Government hospitals with more than 220 beds are now eligible to be designated as teaching hospitals, a reduction from the previous 330-bed requirement. -
Non-Teaching Consultants Eligible for Faculty Posts:
Experienced non-teaching consultants can now be appointed as Professors, Associate Professors, or Assistant Professors. For Professors, three years’ experience as a postgraduate teacher in a recognized government institute is required. For Associate Professors, ten years’ experience in a 220-bed government hospital is necessary, along with completion of specific medical education courses within two years of appointment. Assistant Professors need at least two years’ experience in a qualifying hospital and must complete a biomedical research course within two years. -
:
Faculty serving in super specialty departments or in subjects not part of the undergraduate curriculum are exempt from the Basic Course in Medical Education (BCMET). Faculty from institutes of national importance are also exempt, provided they complete the course within two years of their appointment. -
:
The maximum age for serving as a faculty member in a medical college is now capped at 70 years. For Senior Residents, the upper age limit is 45 years in broad specialties, and 50 years for Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Pathology, Forensic Medicine, and Community Medicine.
These reforms are expected to broaden the pool of eligible faculty and address shortages in medical education, while maintaining standards through structured qualifications and experience requirements.
