New Delhi, July 13, 2025:
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has introduced a significant change in faculty recruitment for Indian medical colleges. Doctors who have completed their postgraduate medical qualifications in five English-speaking countries—the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand—can now skip the mandatory one-year Senior Residency if they fulfill specific criteria.

Key Highlights of the Regulation

  • Eligible Countries: United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand.

  • Exemption: Doctors from these countries with at least one year of teaching experience and valid registration to practice in the respective country are exempt from the one-year Senior Residency requirement for appointment as Assistant Professors in India.

  • Official Notification: The exemption is part of the Medical Institutions (Qualifications of Faculty) Regulations, 2025, published in the Gazette on June 30, 2025.

Detailed Eligibility Criteria

The NMC has outlined specific requirements for each country:

Country Required Qualifications and Registration
United Kingdom Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training or equivalent, final FRCS/FRCP, and registration to practice in the UK.
USA & Canada Doctor of Medicine with Residency Training Certificate in the specialty. For super-specialties, accredited Fellowship.
Australia & NZ Completion of supervised training leading to FRCS/FRCP in the specialty. For super-specialties, at least two years of supervised sub-specialty Fellowship.

Background

Previously, all doctors seeking faculty positions in Indian medical colleges were required to complete a one-year Senior Residency, regardless of where they obtained their postgraduate qualifications. The new regulation recognizes the equivalence of select foreign PG qualifications and aims to streamline the recruitment of experienced international doctors into Indian academia1.

Implications

  • Faster Faculty Recruitment: The exemption is expected to address faculty shortages by making it easier for qualified foreign-trained doctors to join Indian medical colleges.

  • Recognition of International Training: The move acknowledges the rigorous training standards of the specified countries.
