The National Medical Commission (NMC) has taken decisive action after a major bribery scandal involving a senior assessor and a private medical college in Karnataka. The incident came to light when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a senior doctor, who also served as Head of Department (HoD) Anatomy at Murshidabad Medical College, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹10 lakh in exchange for a favourable inspection report for the college.

Strict Penalties Imposed

In response to the incident, the NMC has blacklisted the implicated assessor and imposed severe penalties on the private medical college. For the academic year 2025-26, the renewal of the existing MBBS and postgraduate (PG) medical seats at the college will not be processed. Furthermore, any applications from this institution for an increase in seats or for launching new undergraduate (UG) or postgraduate courses have been cancelled and will not be considered by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) for the same academic year.

Ongoing Investigation

The CBI has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the assessor, certain college authorities, and other unknown individuals. The investigation is ongoing, and the NMC has stated that the assessor remains blacklisted pending the final outcome of the case.

NMC Clarifies Assessor Selection Process

The NMC clarified that assessors are not permanent employees but are senior faculty members from government medical colleges across India, selected through a randomisation process to conduct periodic inspections. The commission emphasised its zero-tolerance stance towards corruption and reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and integrity in medical education oversight.

Potential Penalties for Violators

The NMC outlined a range of penalties for violations, including monetary fines, withholding or cancelling applications for new courses, reducing student intake in subsequent years, and recommending disciplinary action under government service rules or to the Ethics and Medical Registration Board.

The commission has urged all medical colleges and stakeholders to strictly adhere to NMC regulations and uphold the standards of professionalism and public trust in medical education.
